School’s out (for winter break at least!) and your kids couldn’t be happier (who wouldn’t be happy with a few weeks off?). To prevent cabin fever from setting in, consider completing a winter break bucket list. Even creating the list is a fun activity for you and your kids to do together. Here are several fun winter break ideas to get your list started.
Catch up on sleep
Let’s be honest, sleeping in is likely one of the most popular things to do over winter break. Unplugging the alarm clock is a good feeling. Allow your kids to take some time and recharge before the second half of school starts.
Take a trip
When you’re thinking about where to go over winter break, remember you don’t have to travel far. Consider nearby attractions like museums, a zoo (even in the winter this can be a fun outing), an indoor waterpark, a concert/play, etc. But if a longer road trip is on your winter break bucket list, make sure you’re road trip ready and that you have the right protection for your home and car. Feeling adventurous? Take an overnight trip to that small town you’ve been meaning to explore or a cabin where the snow is aplenty.
Give back by volunteering
Between school schedules, kids’ activities and your work schedule, you may not have a lot of time to volunteer. With the time off from school and work, winter break is a great opportunity to give back. Many organizations can use extra help over the winter break season. If you don’t have a favorite organization to give your time to, the website Volunteer Match is a useful resource to help connect you with local organizations based on your interests.
Start a new book series
When you were a kid, you probably had a favorite book series you enjoyed. After each book you knew the story wasn’t over yet — with the next installment the story continued. Reading a series together is a fun tradition to pass onto your kids.
Break out a classic board game
Take out a classic board game from your childhood to share with your kiddos. Whether Monopoly or Chutes and Ladders is your board game of choice, spending time playing one is a great way to spend quality time together without spending a dime.
Bring the outdoors inside
If you live in an area where winter weather means cold temperatures and perhaps snow, outdoor activities may be harder to do. But not to worry: You can still have plenty of outdoor fun inside by planning a few favorite activities, like camping out in the living room or having a picnic in the family room.
Go sledding, build a snowman
If you’ll have snow this winter break, bundle up and break out the sled. This classic pastime has been a favorite winter activity for many. And don’t forget to proudly display your own Frosty the Snowman in the front yard.
Go see a new movie
Winter break is the perfect time to take the kids to see a new movie. Look for seasonal discounts on week days or special showings around the holidays.
There are countless fun things to do over winter break with family and friends. Don’t be afraid to get a little creative to make this winter break fun but relaxing for you and your kiddos. And no matter what makes your winter break bucket list special, we hope you enjoy your break and spend time with those who matter most to you.
